Burgundy and Gold Bridal Shower

My eldest niece, Kierra is getting married in just over a week and we couldn't be more excited for her. This past week I threw her a bridal shower. Everything, burgundy and gold, her wedding colours... which is exactly what she wore when she was two years old as a flower girl in my wedding!

I had so much fun preparing everything for this shower and am so pleased with how it turned out. These sparkling chandeliers were a huge hit. They added a bright and fun element to our dinner.  We set a 24' table with a sequin runner and gorgeous flowers from Ode to a Bloom!

Event the rain held off for this special event. It is so great seeing family and friends surround Kierra with love and support as she takes on the next stage in her life.

Katie Woo  - the queen of caligraphy, did an amazing job with the pace cards!

And a Bavarian Creme cake for the bride to be!

We moved some furniture around and added touches of gold and burgundy throughout the outdoor space.

On to the wedding!  Can't wait to see this beuatiful bride marry her beau.

Jewels on Display

Beautifully organized and displayed jewelry. Tangle free. What a dream come true!

Jewelry can add style and flair to more than just your outfit. This vanity and jewelry display is from my collection.... love my jewels!  not many real jewels..... but jewels none the less!

pics by Janis Nicolay

I have found so many beautiful examples of gorgeous jewelry displays. Alaina Kaczmarski, The Everygirl created a beautiful display that perfectly incorporates her jewelry and vanity decor.

I always love the work done by Pencil & Paper Co.  Isn't this a lovely display of jewelry?

For those of your with larger collections, this idea of a built in jewelry storage behind a mirror is genius!

If budget wasn't part of the equation... A custom jewelry vanity.....um yes!

And what about this DIY by Emily Henderson...Love it!

I can't tell you the frustrations of tangled jewelry when I travel.  Imagine my delight to come across the genius idea from The Crazy Coupon lady.  Cling wrap. Love it!

Why not make your jewelry part of your decor?  A little corner with a mirror and some pin nails for your necklaces.  Pretty bowls on your counter with your favourite earrings.

Boho Chic

The bohemian style has become very popular.  Especially in Southern California where home owners and designers have nailed it by added touches of bohemia to add interest, colour and texture without overwhelming your senses!

Here are 5 ways to add a playfull and interesting touch of Boho Chic to your home:

Here Amber from Amber Interior Design has added pillows from her shop.  Some with a Morrocan flair, others with indigo dyed cloth.

2. Plants Succulents & Catci

I kill most plants that enter my home.  But if I could have planters like these, Id work overtime to keep them pretty!

Beautiful Tabarka tile:

Rattan

And of course rattan.  The nice things about the So-Cal bohemian style is that many items with that flair can be found at thrifts stores and repurposed.

Design with Colour

When the most amazing property in the desired neighborhood became available this client jumped at the chance.

When they purchased the home it was beautifully appointed in a rich, dark décor pallet which was lovely for the previous owner.  But this owner was looking for something more modern, bright, and colourful.  They started the transformation with a few rooms and enlisted my help.

sofa, Stylus; chairs, Grapevine; coffee table, Joss and Main

First was the challenge of making a comfortable and cool room for their 12 year-old son.

We added visual interest with a chalk board feature wall and bright yet masculine colours for him.

Next was the 11 year-old daughter who is a gymnast.  She is homeschooled to accommodate her gymnastics schedule.  There was a spare room upstairs, which became her home school room... and a perfect place for fun sleepovers too.

In this home, colour gave each room personality and uniqueness perfectly suited to the family's needs.

Outdoor Living

Plenty of early sunshine in the Vancouver area is drawing home dwellers into their outdoor spaces. A few years ago I had the pleasure of having an article written about my dream outdoor kitchen. Many of these dreams have become a reality in my most recent outdoor living projects.

House & Home: Tell us about your perfect outdoor kitchen.
Lisa: I would love a grill with a spectacular iron or aged steel hood fan. Stone countertops. A built-in barbecue and cabinetry. The kitchen shouldn’t overpower the space, but allow the cooks to be part of the outdoor action.

H&H: What are the must-have appliances you would include?
Lisa: A great barbecue with a large grilling area. I like to cook my entire meal on the barbecue so I need a large area to grill. A sink is a must. It would be lovely to have a cutting board and garburator so that food scraps don’t sit in the outdoor garbage where it can be neglected or attract unwanted animals. A fridge. A warming drawer; the cool breeze can quickly cool your food so a warming drawer is an excellent idea. An ice maker would be ideal! A dishwasher would be dreamy!

H&H: In terms of furnishings, is there a special line you prefer, or a material (ie. synthetic wicker, teak)?

Lisa: I like to combine wicker, wood and stone. Synthetic wicker offers more of a contemporary sleek look. Weathered natural wicker would be less durable but has more of an old world feel. For furniture that will sit out, more exposed to the elements, I have a set from American Home & Patio. Their foam is quick drying, and the synthetic wicker is UV resistant. Lee Industries has some gorgeous weather resistant slipcovered look furniture for outdoors. Its very luxurious and durable. The perfect combination for outdoors! For under cover, nothing really beats Restoration Hardware. All of their collections are gorgeous. I love their grey weathered wicker.

H&H: Is there a layout you gravitate towards (ie. bench seating with a large table)? What does the table look like?

Lisa: An outdoor living space should have a comfy seating arrangement that somehow surrounds a fire. Whether that be a coffee table fire pit or traditional fireplace. Then a dining area with a weathered teak table and grey weathered wicker chairs. If space is limited a bench offers seating especially great for kids. Don’t forget hanging lighting. Its like jewelry for the room. An outdoor rug also make the room feel more cozy. An electric overhead heat lamp is really practical for Canadian climates, it allows the outdoor space to be used for more months of the year.

H&H: Is there a particular stone for counters or floors that you think is perfect?
Lisa: There is a new countertop available from the makers of Silestone, it is called Dekton. It is completely weather resistant, UV resistant, and the list goes on. It has a 25 year warranty so it’s a perfect solution for outdoor countertops. They have a really nice concrete colour which would be gorgeous for an outdoor kitchen. For flooring I would love oversized slate tiles. That would be lovely.

H&H: Is there a fantasy feature you have been dying to incorporate for a client, but haven’t yet?

LM: Wouldn’t a drinking fountain be fun for kids playing outside? And every summertime cook would love a wood burning pizza oven! I found one from Williams-Sonoma that gives very similar results to a wood burning pizza oven, but at a considerably less cost.

I made this mood board in the inspiration process of another recent outdoor living project.

Raving about Rattan

Currently I'm obsessed with everything rattan! It can bring a playful, retro element to your home.  It can be painted to add a pop of colour, or left natural. . Rattan isn't only for chairs, it can be found in headboards, ottomans, stools, and just about everything you can think of.

I've been looking for a bed for my daughter and fell in love with this Serena and Lily headboard
And who doesn't love a gorgeous rattan shade like this one from sixbyeight
